Fabric Shades

1. Before you begin cleaning, check the tags to see if the shade is made of cotton, canvas or a treated fabric (which can usually be cleaned using water). If your shades are made of linen, silk or wool, you’ll have to dry clean them. First, vacuum the shade. Next, submerge it in a bathtub (leaving the wood or metal mounts exposed) filled with a few inches of cool water and a few capfuls of Woolite.

2. Once the shades have soaked for 5-10 minutes, gently agitate the shade to lift the dust and drain the tub. Refill it with clean water and swish the shade around to rinse it.

3. After blotting any excess water with a towel (make sure it’s colorfast!), use a clothespin to slip the fully extended shade to the shower rod to dry.

Drapes

1. Open pleats by gently tugging on the drapes. Use the brush attachment to vacuum each panel on a low setting. If your drapes are made of loosely woven or delicate fabrics, hold the brush a few inches away.

2. Dust and dirt tend to gather on the lower foot and hem of drapes, so pay special attention to these areas.

3. Apply baby powder to a clean toothbrush and gently brush the spot to get rid of smudges (often caused by pets).

Wooden Blinds

1. Dust or vacuum the blinds.

2. Angle the blinds downward and prepare a solution of water and a few capfuls of dishwashing liquid. Wash each slate with a damp rag, using a dry rag to sop up excess liquid. Flip the blind and repeat on the other side.

Wrap a plain metal washer with colored twine or attach a screw eye to the top of an alphabet block. How to Repair a Window Screen

Now that temperatures are rising, you’ll want to draw back your venetian blinds and open the windows! But what if your window screen is broken? Don’t fret, just read Fantasy Blinds’ how to guide for repairing window screens.

Although seriously ripped screens will need to be replaced, you can easily repair most small tears by filling holes in nylon or fiberglass screens with a few tiny drops if instant adhesive. If you have a metal screen, use epoxy. You can also pick up a patch kit at most home supply and hardware stores.

If you have to patch up a hole, make your own patch for nylon or fiberglass screens by cutting a patch that is just larger than the hole. Next, apply a thin layer of quick-drying glue and press it into place (use low-tack painter’s tape to hold the screen together as it dries to avoid sticky fingers!). Cut a piece of tape larger than the patch, tape it and let it dry. If you have a metal screen, cut a patch from a length of screening that is ½ inch larger all around than the hole to be patched. Trim the edges of the hole to make it neater and bend the teeth of the edges into right angles. Set the patch over the opening, ensuring the teeth penetrate the screen, turn the screen over, and bend teeth flat on the other side to lock in place.

Now that we’ve gone over how to clean your window blinds (read this post), here is a tutorial on how to clean what is lurking behind the blinds: your windows.

1. Spray your frame, sill and hardware with a multipurpose cleaner and wipe with a microfiber cloth.

2. Slather regular mayonnaise (the oils will dissolve the adhesive) on window decals and scrape off using an old credit card (which won’t scratch the glass).

3. Spray window pane (starting inside) with multipurpose cleaner. Don’t have one? Make your own using one part white vinegar to one part water.

4. Wipe pane clean with microfiber cloth (or newspaper if you don’t have one), working from left to right and top to bottom.

5. Repeat steps 2 through 4 on all window panes you can reach, inside and out.

It’s now almost May so we’re hoping you’re already starting to work on your spring cleaning. Where are the areas in your home that you focus on most when it comes to spring cleaning? Do you ever give much thought to your windows and blinds? Truth is, your blinds may be getting neglected when there are an area of your home that can harbor a lot of dust. That dust can lead to allergy problems, excessive sneezing, even issues with asthma. This spring, make sure to thoroughly clean off those blinds. Here are some tips for proper window blind cleaning.

For aluminum miniblinds – Use a soft, clean dust cloth, a vacuum cleaner brush attachment, or any other ordinary household cleaning aid. When vacuuming, tilt the slats up and then down to be able to reach all areas of the blinds with the vacuum brush attachment. If you would like to wash the blinds, use a damp cloth or sponge and some mild detergent. Make sure to wash with warm or cold water and avoid hot water.

For wood blinds – You must be really careful when it comes to cleaning real wood. You should not wash them as doing so can damage the wood. Even though the wood may be sealed, water and excessive dampness can cause the blinds to warp or change color. The best way to clean wood blinds is to wipe them off with a clean soft dust cloth or a vacuum cleaner brush attachment.

For fabric pleated shades – The great thing about cellular shades is that they are anti-static, meaning that they require very little cleaning. All you really need to use is your vacuum cleaner brush to get rid of excess dust that has built up. Different Types of Window Styles

Ok everyone. Do you all know what the different types of windows are? Just in case you don’t, let’s have a little chat right now about the different window styles. That way, when you turn to decorate them you’ll know what types of challenges you are facing. About a month back, I posted about decorating troublesome windows so for those of you who read that post and did not know what I was referring to, here’s your briefer.

Awning – This type of window is one with a single sash hinged at the top to open up and out from the bottom.
Casement – A single sash hinged on the left or right that opens out with a crank or lever. These types of windows are a tad tricky to decorate, so see my blog post about it here.
Double-hung – A window with two sashes that bypass each other vertically when opened from the bottom and top.
Fixed Glass – This type of window does not provide a way to open. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes to combine with other windows. Large fixed windows are sometimes called picture windows.
Gliding – A window with two sashes that move horizontally in a common frame.
Single-hung – A window that features an upper and lower sash, but only the lower sash is operative.

Creating beautiful window treatments for a variety of different window styles can be challenging. But, with a little ingenuity you can create a home environment that makes you feel perfectly at ease.

Spring cleaning time is coming up. That means it's time to start dusting and polishing up your home. You don't want to overlook your window blinds, as they can carry a lot of dust and grime. Here's some tips to clean them properly.

Wood Blinds
Regardless of the type of wood applied on each slat of the blinds, you must take extreme caution when cleaning it. Avoid using water or water-based solutions on them. Water, excessive moisture and related cleaning products can permanently damage your wooden blinds. The recommended way in cleaning wooden blinds is to use a feather duster, a soft head vacuum attachment, or a clean but dry cloth. Wanna hear a little history behind your shutters? Well, it is believed that shutters originated in ancient Greece where they were made of marble and used for ventilation and heat. It is interesting to note that the original shutters were interior shutters rather than exterior. Although many kinds of wood are used to make exterior window shutters, the preferred wood is Western Red Cedar. This wood is impervious to insects and fungus and it is naturally resistant to deterioration. Basically, Western Red Cedar is a naturally preserved wood and has a pleasant scent.

First, you need to measure the entire length of the desired curtains from the top edge to the bottom edge. Cut two widths at this length and sew together with the right sides facing each other. Again, turn under and hem each edge of the valance. Next, sew any decorative trims you want to add to the upper edge of the right side of the valance and the upper edges of both right sides of the side panels.

You may need to install a curtain rod above the window, if there is not one already there. After this, go ahead and clip drapery rings onto the upper edge of the valance at evenly across the entire valance. You need to also clip the rings along the upper edges of the side panels. That’s it. Now all you need to do is slide the curtains onto the rod and space them evenly. And viola, beautiful window treatments to cover your new vertical blinds.

IKEA Recalling Some Window Blinds

IKEA, a Swedish home decor company, has recently announced on June 10, 2010 that it is voluntarily recalling over 3 million window blinds. The reason, as stated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, is the risk of strangulation posed by the free hanging cords of the window blinds. This recall includes roman shades, roll-up blinds and certain types of roller blinds that do not have tension devices and were sold in the U.S. between January 1998 and June 2010. These 3 million recalled window treatments are in addition to several previous recalls in 2008 and 2009. In November, 2008 and August, 2009 about 790,000 roman shades were recalled and, in October, 2009 533,000 roller blinds were recalled. IKEA has decided to take this action as a precautionary measure to prevent any further injury or harm to their customers.

The recall was spurred by the report of 1 1/2 year old Massachusetts boy who nearly choked on a roman shade cord. There have also been two other child strangulation incidents due to hazardous cords of IKEA blinds, resulting in one death and one near death. All three of these incidents were caused by roman shades, however roller shades and roll up shades are also being recalled because they share the same hazardous cords and loops that lack a tension device.

With this expanded recall, IKEA has officially joined the industry wide recall of over 50 million window blinds that took place last December for the exact same product and reasons. Such retailers also involved are, Walmart, J.C. Penney, Ace Hardware, and many others. The safety agency has estimated that about 500 children have strangled on the cords of blinds and shades since the early 1980s, an average of about one child each month. This shocking statistic demonstrates the real danger of the situation and why almost the entire industry was compelled to recall these window blind products.
